The official Babacombe Model Village guide says, 'As one of the world's oldest rural skills, thatching presented a big challenge when trying to make it appear authentic in miniature. The traditional reed used for full size thatch would look out of scale on a model, so began a long search for a suitable material to create the desired effect. Eventually we found a solution to the problem - coconut fibre. This material has now been used effectively for over 40 years and is applied to the models using exactly the same techniques as are used on a real thatched roof'.
