Flowers/buds of a coconut palm (chotta). The coconut tree was cut down for some reason, and I could take this shot easily.

The coconut tree is called thengu തെങ്ങ്, or Kera Vriksham കേരവൃക്ഷം (vriksham = tree) in malayalam and the state of Kerala in India is named after this to mean the land of coconut trees. Almost every part of the coconut tree is used in Kerala, one way or the other. Tender coconut is an interesting, healthy, nutritious drink. The coconut kernel is used in cooking and dried to extract coconut oil. The oil is used for cooking, and by the soap and cosmetics industry. The coconut tree trunk, the shell , and the husk are all used in numerous ways to makelike house hold items, coir, and as a building material. And then, of course you have Kallu കള്ള്

The Times of India writes in an editorial article:
God’s Own Fruit
[ FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2002 12:07:04 AM ]
This year “God’s own country” has additional reason to celebrate Onam, thanks to timely western reports that scientists have shed their prejudices about coconut oil. They now proclaim it is “the world’s healthiest edible oil”.
As the couplet goes, “What is the use of being high and mighty, if you don’t help the needy? Then, like the tall palm, you are unable to provide shade and your fruits lie beyond the tired traveller’s reach”.
Not the coconut palm which offers food, beverage, cooking oil, timber, thatching, coir-fibre, utensil containers, medicine, cosmetics and even liquor. But the West rejected the coconut, whose milk, oil, shredded white kernel and dried copra were considered rich in calories and cholesterol, causing weight and heart problems.

I like the color but I think I'd like it better rotated to the left IMHO
dvb356 2006-02-16 13:34:17
Thanks, David - I guess you're right about rotating it, but the dry leaves on it look a bit odd
MalayalaM 2006-02-16 16:40:59
wow, I never saw coconut flowers before, didn't even know how they looked! Thanks!

It's so fascinating to see such great pictures of plants that are not native to our own environment. Flickr is a great way to "travel" --thanks

Hi there ,

I am in urgent need of lots of coconut flowers on a daily basis for medicinal purpose.

I live in Uttar pradesh where coconut plantations are not present .

Hence i need your help to know a method of cultivating cocout flowers here.

thanking you in anticipation
prashuone 2007-10-30 22:10:29
I am not an expert on this. Regular coconut takes several years to flower and is typically planted in the beginning of the October (NE) monsoon.

Some of these links may help:

thanks for sharing your knowledge! I found not long ago how they produce sugar by boiling the liquid of the flowers. The flower cut from the tree starts dripping liquid which has been collected.
